Exploding Corona Cases

Just a quick post; I know I just wrote about this topic but last night’s pull showed that the counts are starting to explode. I’m dreading this.

The sources for the world comes from Wikipedia, as per the Source box at the end of this post.

The World

Image 1: Continents

Europe has been surging mainly due to the combination of UK, Spain, France and the Netherlands. US just did a huge surge sometime around 7/21/2021.

It looks like Spain and the Netherlands just broke their ascent, so we will see what the next few days show.

The key insight is found in looking at the table in each charts’ upper right hand corner. On 7/16/2021, US resided in the 11th place slot (down from first place back in February), but just five days later, US had climbed to fifth place. These tables show the total counts of cases over the prior 14 days. UK climbed from fourth to second place during that same time period.

By the way, last Monday, UK had Freedom Day where all restrictions were lifted. I don’t know what they are thinking – it just seems insane. The pandemic is still in progress with a more contagious, and maybe a more dangerous, variant.

The US

The source in the next series of images comes from the CDC because the CDC appears to retrieve the data on a daily basis. For example, Wikipedia and JHU shows a weekly lump sum of the counts once a week for Florida whereas the CDC has a daily count. Also, the only hospitalization information that I can find comes from the CDC, too. The source box at the end of this post indicates the links to the CDC.

Northeast

The Northeast is just barely starting to see increases in case counts, although I admit it may be because visuals are swamped by the counts in January/February. However the case may be, I think the Northeast is currently in the best position when you compare the Northeast to the other regions. I believe the Northeast has the best vaccination rates.

The stars represent states that I think are just starting to see a rise in counts. Some are so small that I may be reading too much into the data. Double stars are those cases where the increases are readily apparent.

Midwest

The Midwest are definitely showing some upticks; the rise are more apparent in this region.

West

The West are also showing some upticks, too.

South

Here, we see the South are really hurting with Florida leading the way. I fear this is going to get really bad before the end of the month and hurricane season is upon us. These surges are why I had to do a quick post to make a record of what is going on.
