Ai replacing humans, circa 5/24/2025

First signs of regrets in the AI race?

Most of the news today shows the inexorable spread of AI throughout businesses. We have these AI agents that are beginning to operate at the enterprise level which means a potential of replacing employees.

It’s just a steady drip drip drip of those news.

But last week I saw something different. I don’t know if this is a faint glimmer or just a dying gasp.

Remember that Klarna CEO who bragged about replacing 700 customer agents with an AI chatbot? And saying something about not hiring any humans this year? Or reducing the workforce by 20%, or 40%, depending on which article you read?

Well, according to Futurism, this guy may be singing a different tune. The problem is only one source is reporting this turnabout. If more news sources were to report similar sentiments elsewhere, I might think there could be a possibility of executives reassessing their approach.

The two articles talking about the Klarna CEO are:

These are provocative and eye-catching headlines, but the more typical article says something like “50% of the executives plan on replacing employees with AI”. Or the other angle is that the college graduates are being severely impacted as entry level jobs are at risk of AI replacement.

Here are some juicy quotes that I found in those articles:

“So why the sudden about-face? As it turns out, leaving your already-frustrated customers to deal with a slop-spinning algorithm isn’t exactly best practice.”

Just about every company uses cost as the evaluation factor:

“…cost unfortunately seems to have been a too predominant evaluation factor when organizing this, what you end up having is lower quality.”

“In January of last year, a survey of over 1,400 business executives found that 66 percent were “ambivalent or outright dissatisfied with their organization’s progress on AI and GenAI so far.” The top issue corporate bosses cited was AI’s “lack of talent and skills.””

“…over 55 percent of UK business leaders who rushed to replace jobs with AI now regret their decision.”

I think it is too early to celebrate. We don’t know who will win out: those who recognize the importance of human creativity, innovation and judgment versus those with dollar signs on their eyeballs. The history of capitalism suggests the latter.
