Another Hurricane
I’m past the danger from hurricane Delta. This year, 2020, is some year. The climate change seems to be getting more and more severe: the fires in the West seem to be encompassing ever larger swaths of land and seem to be starting to encroach populated cities, and the Atlantic/Caribbean/Gulf oceans have produced second place record for most storms in the ocean and may be first place for most storms making landfall on the U.S. soil. The year 2005 is apparently the historic year for most storms and the most “energetic” or “destructive” storms (what meteorologists call the “ACE” – accumulated cyclone energy – factor); of course, that was the year of the notorious Katrina (which basically turned people against George Bush), Rita and Wilma. The 2020 “ACE” factor has just reached the average. Thank goodness the tropical cyclone season is weaker this year.
I’m hoping that for me, this is the last tropical cyclone to worry about because historically, my area does not get hit by hurricanes in October, so cross my fingers.
Of course, with climate change, all of that could be changing.
On top of the climate change effect, 2020 also includes the pandemic, the racial discontent, and the economic recession/depression stemming from the pandemic. And on top of that, we are in a particularly nasty and scary election year. Our president just caught the virus and is taking some steroids for the virus, steroids that are known for making one behave strangely or erratically. At least, I would like to think it’s the drugs and not the outcome of extreme stress. Whatever, we are now in a scary stage.
So, from now until January 20th, we are in deeply dangerous territory. Hopefully, the outcome in November and January will be positive, but I think we will still be in danger for quite some time after because of some “bad elements” that have been stirred up.
I think 2020 is going to be for the history books.
