Are You An Expert?
When I was back at SAIC, folks thought I was an expert on Excel and I thought, “Oh, boy, are you clueless.” I knew I was just an extremely creative user of Excel and basically used just maybe 5 things. I didn’t know any VBA and I had no ideas what array formulas could do. But I was extremely creative in getting Excel to solve some problems. Today I know more about those things but I’m still nowhere near to being an expert.
Then I came upon Leila Gharani’s XcelPlus website. Leila is the one I see on YouTube and she comes out with some really cool stuff that you can do with Excel and Powerpoint. I read her “About” page and I chuckled at her comment about thinking she was an expert until she reached the Excel Forums.
Yes, there’s a lot packed into Excel and most of us barely touch the surface of what it can do for our work. We just don’t let it do the work for us. Most of us are just stopped at VLOOKUPS and maybe Pivot Tables and our own two hands.
