Presidential Debate: Just Wow

I watched the Presidential Debate last night and all I can think of is Wow!

I’m just numb.

I normally don’t watch debates because I prefer to read what happened and read the analysis since I’m generally not up to speed on all of the policies. Politics just doesn’t grab a hold of me. I might have watched the Clinton/Trump debate(s) in 2016 but I don’t recall the interruptions. I do recall Trump stalking or standing behind Clinton in a seeming menacing way and found him creepy for that, so I know I watched at least one of the debates. I just don’t remember the interruptions.

My impression was that most of the interruptions were coming from Trump but I had no idea whether that was normal for a debate. It seemed rude and unseemly but what do I know? Reading the analysis today I learned that his interruptions were over the top, unlike anything ever seen in previous Presidential debates. The general consensus, outside of his supporters, was that Trump was ugly and over the top but he was basically showing you who he is.

I didn’t get a sense that he was putting forth what he was going to do if he was re-elected again. Instead, it was just a barrage of nonsense, a lot of which were lies (at least to my knowledge) and it seemed like his main tactic was to interrupt Biden so Biden couldn’t bring forth his ideas of what he would do if he was voted in. I got the impression that Trump was afraid for us voters to hear what Biden had to say in case Biden persuades us to vote for him.

The New York Times article this week probably gives a clue to his behavior: aside from legal problems, he appears to be heading into financial straits. If he loses the election, he loses the protections of the Presidency and the nooses around him automatically tightens up, driving him much closer to deep problems. Probably the most worrisome would be the Russians if he is in financial hock to them. That’s probably the most concerning because his life might be involved.

By the end of the night, the most threatening statement was “Proud Boys…Stand back and stand by” when he was asked by Chris Wallace if he would condemn the white supremacists. Trump never did; he just said “stand back and stand by”.

Huh? What does that mean? It sounds like he just told that militia group to stand by until he gives some kind of order. Order to attack? Order intimidate people? What exactly does that mean.

That was very ugly…so much so, that Fox and Friends said he should clarify what he meant by that.
